Unless you have spent the last two or three years under a rock, you have undoubtedly heard about the notorious staff shortage hitting the entire country. Needless to say that the COVID-19 pandemic is making the situation even more dire! You are preoccupied?  No wonder!  As an example, the latest (2018) HR Barometer, published by the “Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés du Québec”, found that the average employee turnover, for all sectors, was a daunting 25.2 %!  Your organization is most likely impacted already, inevitably dragging down its performance.

The millenials’ arrival in the workplace is certainly changing the landscape. They clearly do not expect the same from work as their predecessors did. Of course, mass retirements accentuate the issue even further. And, yes, some highly specialized sectors (e.g.: welders, civil engineering technicians, etc.) are facing a real personnel shortage. That being said, upon taking a closer look, most organizations do NOT have a growth rate equivalent to their turnover rate. In general, it is much lower.

So, what does that mean?  In essence, the greater the difference between your turnover and your growth rates (% turnover – % growth), the more likely the problem is caused by a leadership skills gap on the part of your managers. Let’s be real: nowadays, antiquated leadership approaches simply do not work anymore. Bar, none!
